Care of Finishes

Like anything special, the architectural hardware on your doors needs looking after. More finishes are ruined by incorrect cleaning than by any other means. Proper care of the finish will extend the life dramatically and maintain the original appearance of the product. For example, proprietary metal polishes or abrasive materials should never be used on plated or lacquered finishes as this can cause irreparable damage to the deposited film.

For products which are used internally, regular cleaning with warm soapy water should be enough to keep the finish in its original condition and the occasional use of a good quality wax polish will provide extra protection.

The weather, pollution, humidity, salt, acid rain, etc., can all have a detrimental effect on products which are used externally and regular use of a good quality wax polish will help to protect them. Plated finishes will benefit from the occasional use of chrome cleaner followed by a wipe over with a lightly oiled cloth. Unlacquered brass or bronze finishes should be regularly cleaned with metal polish unless the intention is to let the surface age naturally through oxidisation.
